So, I have my own youtube channel and decided to put up a rough cut video on the topic since after reviewing a few I thought I could tackle it a bit different. I am not the most skilled editor/vlogger, etc. So feedback is appreciated and we might want to consider making a youtube channel associated with the site and on the off chance it every generates any revenue, filter it back into it? Well here it is, me in all my distracting glasses glory.

Nathan! Done like a pro! :)

Very insightful and personal account that I can totally relate to so I think you hit the nail on the head there.
Just one thing. If you've done using my head, could I have it back please? ;)

Sure thing Scotty, I am used to having more empty space in my own =P

And thanks both for the feedback, much appreciated.

No Nathan.

I meant my physical head not my metaphorical one.
I feel I may have found my dopple-ganger.

Thanks for this, I find that I look at the world in a lot of similar ways to you as well. Even though I couldn't actually watch you as your glasses were too distracting as you said, I just listened. Although I am now having to go back and look at some Temple Grandin ideas as well.I read a lot of her ideas when my son was going to through the assessments for his ASD diagnosis but I missed the bit about how she grades autistic people depending on how visual their minds are

Scotty, I was a bit ambiguous I meant that too, thus my subtle joke that my physical head was emptier haha, I do enjoy a bit of self-deprecating humor from time to time, I find myself obnoxious when I take myself too seriously (then I would be my brother, and I shudder at the thought)

Thanks for trying Julia, I got a new pair recently (I have excellent vision, but trouble with fluorescent lights and computer screen back-lighting) and they certainly did not use an image that indicated I had exposed shiny steel veins around them. Sadly, it was a $50 dollar set of non-prescription glasses, and I can't justify buying another pair at this time =/

Temple Grandin is fascinating, I learned about her in my undergrad, we both attend the same small liberal arts college for our bachelors, albeit it at different times, but being the most well known alumni from there, she certainly came up a lot. Her TED talk is where she best outlines the classifications.

I'm starting to fear that we may actually BE the same person.

Nice video!

I think this could help a lot of new discovers as well as people which are close to us.

For me it was great because it was a nice resume of things we have been talking about.

A nice mic, would be nice though ;)

Keep up the good work! B)

Thanks for the feedback, a better mic...that will make the list. I also know I need to do something about my current set of Irlen glasses, they even annoyed me, I might just take black finger nail polish to the shiny parts.

Scotty...which of us gets to be the evil twin then?

yeah, I will have to script and memorize I think, or print everything out and pin it to the wall so it does not look like I am looking down. Without the glasses to filter the computer lighting I have trouble following the lines and tend to skip about (and I have notes on screen so I stay on task and not go off on tangents too much) but the tinted lenses really help. Though a lot of my friends are still goth, even if I do not actually identify with it as much as I once did, and they are mighty skillful with that black nail polish! (that is of course a stereotype joke, some of them are actually pretty horrid)

Thanks Nathan, I have just watched the TED talk by Temple Grandin, I would be interested to know how many people with autistic tendencies as well as those who are actually on the spectrum also are aphantasiacs. Not sure that I entirely agree that visualisers find it easier to relate to animals and their behaviour. As a vet myself I would hope that my understanding of animals is a lot better than most. Also looking at some of the other posts on this forum there is another vet already on this forum. I wish that I had been able to hear Temple in person, I was planning on going to an autism conference that she was due to speak at, after she cancelled I didn't bother registering

Well my lines were just bullet points, to keep me on track, not a fully written script or dialogue, just some external memory to make sure I did not miss anything I wanted to touch on or digress too much haha.

Jill, I think for Temple it gives her a different perspective, a more visceral relation. I would not say it is superior. I have a very good understanding of animals myself, I am that guy who even the most ornery feline seems to warm up to. But for me it is simple cause and effect, understanding their evolutionary adapted behavior and thinking very logically about it, instead of projecting anthropomorphised concepts onto them. But, I say difference is good, she could visualize that journey in her head, then apply her rigorous autistic logic to it, and thus the combination of the two becomes a pretty powerful tool, it gives her a different perspective that many do not have, which is pretty valuable. Yet, a lot of that can be trained and taught, it becomes a way of thinking about a process that people may not have really thought of before, but once understood we can apply aspects of it, even if we ourselves cannot visualize it, we can shift cognitively and actively think "hrmm what does this look, smell, and sound like to an animal?"

Just read the BBC article on Aphantasia today and immediately began looking around for more information as I am convinced I am on the lower end of the Aphantasiac (sp?) spectrum.

This video was fantastic and really explained some of the things I have been experiencing.

I especially loved your comments about some people having Aphantasia and using this as a driving force to learn a creative craft such as drawing.
I myself am currently exploring sketching/drawing and find that, even though I have to use reference images to create something (without them I usually stare at a blank sheet of paper), it definitely helps me to "visualise" things in my own way.

Very glad I found this forum. Excited to learn more about this with you guys.

Well. I'm not the megalomaniac type that post videos of myself to speak to the world.

......saying that. If time restraints are a problem then I don't mind doing Tuesdays, Thursdays and alternate weak-ends.

I can work with that, need to take a break from the limelight and work on my evil tan lines.

Besides the glasses I really enjoyed the video. The glasses didn't distract me from what you were saying but I can see how others could have that issue. I also liked all the clutter (no joke) it gives me something else to look at while you speak (no offense). You moved and spoke very naturally.

I will say that I was fine with the length but others might think it was too long (that's what she said!). Maybe future videos could be about 3 minutes or less.

Another suggestion about the glasses issue. Why don't you just print it out the bullet points and put it in front of the screen and turn the screen off. Use a lamp or two in the side of you for lighting.

Thanks for posting.

I think if I do more videos I will have my 5 year old daughter hold my cane with instructions to club me when I get off topic, I think that would be a hilarious approach! =P
