different approaches will appeal to different ways of thinking, so the more the merrier I say!

I laughed more than a few times, and tried to get myself to consider saying "wank bank" on video, in conversation not a problem, but so used to cultivating a public image that I am certainly inhibited in that area =)

My Youtube clip on how Aphantasia affects me.

I call it a condition in the video as I did not realise people had an issue with it being called that when I recorded the clip.
It is long and shoddily made but it is real life.

I find I take risks, I enjoy risk, and that annoys people, they are calculated risks, so not reckless, but still and unnecessary thing to do.

Hi monkey maiden I absolutely loved your video - I laughed and laughed. I too am really good at reading body language and facial expressions etc. I work in a contact centre and can tell so much about a persons energy or how they are feeling etc just by talking to them and I express my energy and patience really well over the phone. Often when talking to family or friends over the phone I pick up really quickly if they are distracted by something - like watching TV or if they are in a rush etc. I also have a strong attention to detail. I notice silly things like hairs on my girlfriends neck ( that needs to be plucked) or little things like if you have eyelashes in the corner if your eye. I will also notice really subtle changes to things - I always notice if a friend or work colleague has had a hair cut or coloured their hair or if you have put a new photo in your lounge or a new pot on your verandah. I am naughty but people that talk or think slowly irritate me (I know it's not their fault - poor soles) as I think really fast and talk really fast - and I talk a lot. My txt messages are always 4 times longer that my friends two to three word replies. I hate saying um - and notice that the majority of people say it all the time, 4-5 times in a sentence. I have noticed that the word um is rarely used in movies when the sentences are scripted.

Terrific video, MonkeyMaiden! What a blast. I agree with your dad (I'm a really old person like him!) when he says that it hasn't changed anything. I've had a long career (well, 2 or 3 careers actually) in the visual arts, and I don't think that my aphantasia has made any difference. Of course for nearly all of that time I thought that everybody else was like me, except for some people who had 'photographic memories' - and I thought of them as freaks. Now I realise I'm the freak - damn! I'll have to dress in weird clothes and hang around graveyards at night....

I think you're right when you talked about the ability to extract information from a scene. And I'm so with you on the ice-cream cone! Even though I can't produce a mental image of one, I could draw it in as much detail as I like. I know what an ice-cream cone looks like without actually seeing it - so hard to explain! It's as if my mind can access memories (not images) of every ice-cream cone I've ever seen and instantly produce a synthesis from which I can 'construct' it - but there are no words or pictures involved. Perhaps we need a new word to describe this sort of memory.

Here's another example: even though you can't see your daughter's face in your mind's eye, if you were shown a picture of someone selected at random, you could say 'she doesn't look like that' or 'she's got the same chin but her nose is different' or something like that. So what are you comparing? Somehow you've got visual memory without actually seeing a mental picture.

Sorry to ramble on. It's just so good to find that there are other people to talk about this stuff with...

I've never gotten that whole "Every man has imagined himself sleeping with every girl he knows" I'm just like, wha? I don't get it... why would you do that... and of course I didn't realize they meant they could -see- such things...
I find I've never enjoyed porn, and I don't fantasize about people. I never got the "imagining someone else in your head during sex" thing many people apparently do. I don't/can't/wouldn't want to anyway. :p
And the wank bank. O_O Lol. Yea I never understood that term, I mean I mostly saw it online so figured people were saving it to a folder on their PC. :p

I thought of something odd while watching the video. Someone used to be a bit blah to me because I'm an adult that enjoys video games... suggesting I'm "living in a fantasy world", and that adults read books, not play games. I'm not fond of books, I like video games (but there needs to be a strong story really.) I don't know if it's relevant to something but I thought of it while watching this. o_O

Empathy. I know empathy v sympathy was mentioned in another thread. I am bad at knowing for sure what emotion someone has facially (or atleast, my bf claims he's not pissed off when I think he is sometimes...), but in terms of like knowing someone went through something horrible, I can relate to that feeling and comprehend/feel what they would be in that? I don't know how to explain... I have to avoid watching sad/upsetting things cause I can "feel". I'm too good at "putting myself in their shoes" (not visually). Though only for sad/upsetting stuff I guess, I couldn't put myself in the shoes of someone enjoying making lots of money or something... I don't know, I've lost my train of thought so I'll stop now.
~*~ Still figuring it all out, I either have aphantasia or weak visualization ability, definitely 0 purposeful visualization. ~*~
~*~ I suffer from PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, OCD; and potentially some sort of high functioning autism, but that one is unconfirmed. ~*~
