DOMINIC LAWSON: I've never been able to picture my wife

Sometimes, if I have been insensitive, my wife will say: 'You have no imagination.' It turns out that she is right, in the most literal sense. Though only in the past few days have I begun to understand how or why.

Last week BBC news online published a feature entitled 'Aphantasia: A life without mental images'. What drew me to the story was the name of the professor of cognitive neurology who had invented this term (from the Greek meaning 'without the ability to form images'): Adam Zeman. More than 40 years ago, Adam and I had shared a room at a London boarding school — though we had not been in touch since.

But as I read the story, I suddenly realised that I might as well have been one of his experimental subjects. For though I had never given the matter any thought until now, I am one of those who has no ability to generate an image in my head: that is, I have no mind's eye.

Another great article from, what I assume to be a personality well known or somewhat known in the UK?

That worked...Nigella Lawson, does in fact have some name recognition for me. I have read the Daily Mail before, but I will admit to seldom noting who the journalist is unless I intend to do follow up research. Thanks for educating me!

looks like we still ended up with a double post, literally within a minute or so of each other! Personally, I say that is a good thing, we are on the ball.

Thomas - I've now merged them

The Daily Mail is not a place for serious research anyway, but a great place for a trashy tabloid read , with frequently poorly written articles with bad science in them. I suspect I wouldn't know who he was either without knowing the links from his family. To be fair he also writes for much better publications
